Health Education Resource Office Aims to Educate Students on Healthier Lifestyles

The Health Education Resource Office (HERO) will host a Cook Well Live Well Nutrition Lesson and Cooking Class, open to all University of Kansas students March 9, 2015 from 4-6 p.m. at Watkins Memorial Health Center.

Health Education Resource Office is “a source for KU community wellness through partnerships that support innovative approaches toward optimal health while maximizing academic and professional success,” according to Health Education Resource Office’s website.

This class takes place at least once a month in different locations around campus. This month’s class will be special, though, as it is open to any student at the University of Kansas.

The main goal of the Nutrition Lesson and Cooking Class is to teach students how to cook healthy meals while also living a healthy lifestyle. Every class spends the first half talking about nutrition, although different aspects. The second half is a hands-on cooking experience where participants learn how to make a healthy dish that is in accordance with the first half’s nutrition lessons.

Kelsey Fortin, a University of Kansas alum and HERO employee, teaches the class every month, no matter its location. She uses her recent college years to relate to students’ financial and general health issues.

Although the class set-up stays the same, Fortin said “the topic of these classes is ever-changing.” This month’s class will focus on how to plan healthy meals on a college student’s budget.
